We currently use two different types of livestock guardians. Our donkey, Pixie, is a miniature breed and guards our bucks. We also use Great Pyrenees dogs to guard our does.
Donkeys are very territorial in nature, which is a useful trait. They are strongly and instinctually aggressive to canines (dogs and coyotes) and this behavior extends protection to their pasture mates. Standard and Mammoth donkeys, can be formidable fighters – biting, kicking, slashing and chasing intruders, etc. Our miniature donkey, Pixie, also protects against deer. She chases them out of the pasture! Miniature donkeys have the best of intentions for guarding but their small size leaves them vulnerable to prey. For true protection, let a larger donkey, livestock guardian dog or a llama to protect your herd.
Great Pyrenees are a large, highly intelligent, muscular and double-coated dog. They were originally bred to guard sheep in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain with their white coats providing camouflage in the snow. They are vocal and have loud barks along with exceptional hearing. Because of their size, they need lots of room to exercise and food.
Our boys (all brothers born in 2024) are full-time members of our farm and have formed a strong bond with the goat herd. Their ability to guard the goats is instinctive and they live with them 24/7. Once full grown, they will weigh between 100 and 160 pounds with a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. Meet Diesel, Levi and Wrangler!
